In this project proposal, experts in the fields of nanomedicine, imaging, and translational animal and in vitro models join forces to develop a new approach for the treatment and monitoring of FGR (Fetal Growth Restriction) and PE (Preeclampsia). This approach addresses both the urgent need for an effective and safe therapy, as well as the need for an effective monitoring technique for placental and fetal oxygenation.
Specifically, we propose to (1) develop an siRNA delivery system using nanoparticles to treat placental dysfunction, with the goal of preventing nanoparticle passage across the placenta, and (2) to develop photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and blood-oxygen-level-dependent MRI (BOLD-MRI) techniques to monitor placental and fetal oxygenation.
The primary outcome of this project will be a new therapeutic platform for placental insufficiency, ensuring the safest possible treatment for both mother and fetus. In addition, clinicians will gain access to new imaging technologies to better assess the condition of the unborn child. This will facilitate the monitoring of placental insufficiency and enable better-informed decisions on whether and when to initiate preterm delivery or prenatal interventions.
