MRI Research Amsterdam UMC

Reduced Use of Contrast Agents

Our goal is to halve the injected Dotarem dose in all neuroradiological MRI scans at both sites by default from mid-2026. The halving is in the interest of patient safety (fewer dose-dependent symptoms) and will reduce the amount of contrast agent in the drinking water. Better use of contrast agents provides an important and necessary contribution to planetary health by hospitals. For Amsterdam UMC, this reduction will also generate savings. In 2022, the costs for Dotarem were over €340,000. These savings will eventually occur in other hospitals as well.
